When Soft Romance Meets Modern Luxe
I’ll jump at any opportunity to shoot a wedding in San Diego. So when Olivia and Kento reached out asking if I’d shoot their wedding at Building 177 in San Diego, I was THRILLED. Not only did they pick an amazing venue for their wedding, but these two were a blast to work with.
Building 177 in San Diego is located right by Liberty Station, which can be insanely crowded during the weekends. So I really emphasized using the venue they loved for their portraits and minimized dealing with the crowds. Plus, this made their modern vibe really pop, especially since the white walls and tall windows gave us plenty of bright space to work with.
Olivia & Kento
These two met in college in San Diego, but they’ve since moved to the Bay Area. However, they wanted to honor the roots of their relationship and have their wedding where it all started.
They found me on Instagram, and specifically wanted a fun, creative photographer who wouldn’t make them feel awkward (which is what I do best!) so it was a perfect match.
Olivia and Kento wanted their wedding at Building 177 in San Diego to have a minimal, elegant vibe with lots of black and white. A phrase they used a lot was “soft romance meets modern luxe” and I was SO here for it! They had lots of black and white signage and accents throughout the space, which allowed the greenery and florals to really pop and set the mood.
A Modern Wedding at Building 177 in San Diego
There were so many sweet moments throughout Olivia and Kento’s wedding day. From dressing up their dogs to be a part of the wedding party (SO CUTE) to reading private vows during their first look, these two were absolutely swoon-worthy together.
Their first look was actually something kind of new and exciting! They had their first look right before they walked down the aisle together, which everyone loved. I don’t see many couples doing this, but I imagine plenty will in the future since it’s a great way to involve the wedding guests in the first look.
I also really appreciated that both Olivia and Kento had secondary outfits to change into that honored their culture and heritage. And they were still very on-brand for the entire vibe of the wedding, which made the look even more special. It’s clear that their friends, family, and culture mean a lot to them, so it was a unique way to honor that.
Along with the sweet moments, there were also plenty of funny and silly moments. For example, Olivia and Kento entered their wedding reception dinner wearing sunglasses and immediately showered in fake dollar bills. It was hilarious!
And Olivia and Kento had some great moments with their wedding party as well. We got some great shots of the groomsmen and bridesmaids, which really captured the energy of the day. It was a fantastic wedding and I had a blast with this amazing couple!
Final Thoughts
Going back to your roots is always a significant experience, whether that be honoring your heritage or honoring the start of your relationship. Olivia and Kento are well-versed in acknowledging every step of the journey, so I felt honored to be a part of such a special day for them.
If you have a wedding in San Diego coming up and want a fun wedding photographer, I’d love to connect with you!
